Arts on the Square presents the Harrisburg Choral Society and the Sanctuary Choir of Market Square Presbyterian Churchin “Choral Masterworks” on Sunday, May 21, at 4:00 p.m. at Market Square Church, 20 S. Second St., Harrisburg.
The 80-voice combined choirs will sing Vaughn Williams “Five Mystical Songs” and Beethoven’s “Mass in C,” accompanied by chamber orchestra and organ. Dr. Kyle Zeuch, music director of the Choral Society, will conduct. Tyler A. Canonico, minister of music at Market Square Church and artistic director of Arts on the Square, will be organist.
In “Five Mystical Songs,” English composer Ralph Vaughn Williams set to music poems from the 1633 collection The Temple: Sacred Poems by Welsh poet and Anglican priest George Herbert. Beethoven’s “Mass in C” was composed in 1807, utilizing heightened drama and orchestral and harmonic resources of the early 19th century.
Both works feature soloists, including Sarah Shafer, soprano; Laura Petravage, mezzo-soprano; Jonathan Walker-Vankuren, tenor; Ross Tamaccio, baritone; and Jordan Markham, bass.
